Working with The Entrepreneur’s Source® can lead to tremendous success; such is the case with Kelly Miller, owner of the Junk King in Tallahassee, FL. We sat down to talk with Kelly about his experience in investing in a franchise. He had always dreamed of being a small business owner, and through his work with The Entrepreneur’s Source® and a good helping of hard work and determination, Kelly has made that dream a reality.

According to Nancy Norton, The Entrepreneur’s Source® franchise coach, who had helped to guide Kelly through his journey to discovery, Kelly’s story is a phenomenal example of the kind of long-term business success that aspiring business owners can achieve when they commit to working within the TES coaching methodology.

Q: To start off with, can you tell us a little bit about your background?

A: My name is Kelly Miller, and the franchise that I own is called Junk King. It’s an eco-friendly junk removal service. I’ve been doing this for almost six years now, and I love it. I have two little boys, 5 and 3, and my wife, Kristin, and I have been married since 2009. We’ve been in this together since I got in the self-employment world, and she’s been very supportive through this journey.

Q: And what about your career? Can you give us a little information on how you discovered The Entrepreneur’s Source®?

I grew up in Idaho before moving to Tennessee at the age of 10. I ended up going to the University of Tennessee. I graduated in 2001 — it was a bit of a tough job market back then. I worked full time doing commission sales on electronics while in school, and after I had graduated, I was glad to get a job with a company that sells plumbing materials wholesale, Ferguson Enterprises. They gave me the option to relocate to Florida, so off I went. I started in the warehouse but quickly rose through the ranks by utilizing their training program. The work was hard, but I enjoyed it. I liked solving logistical problems and working on construction projects. I also did some side consulting for construction companies. After a while, I started noticing that things were slowing down. I saw the 2008 market crash coming, so I decided to leave the construction industry.

I then went to work for Xerox doing state contract sales at the end of 2007. It exposed me to a more specific type of sales, but it really didn’t suit me. After a year or so, I got an offer from a small business, Rumbles Office Equipment Solutions, and I jumped at the opportunity. It was my first time working outside of the big corporate world. The man I worked for, Fortson Rumble, is a self-made business success; I learned so much from him during my time at that company that I decided I didn’t want to work for anyone else. If he can do it, so can I. I was determined to own my own company, so I quit my job, and that’s when the Junk King adventure began.

Q: How did it all start with Junk King and The Entrepreneur’s Source®?

For the first time in my adult life, I was unemployed. I tried to figure out what I wanted to do, and then I made a connection with my Entrepreneur’s Source coach. I had never thought of the junk removal industry, but when she introduced me to the Junk King franchise, it just felt right. I wound up going on a tour with the flagship Junk King franchise in San Carlos California, saw the work they were doing, and loved it.

Q: How did you finance this investment?

Unfortunately, the initial startup costs for Junk King were out of my price range. Financing that business venture was going to be tough, so we had to come up with some different options. My coach connected me with a company that helps you line up working credit. We felt bogged down a bit by money, but sometimes you have to invest money to make money, and it paid off in the end.

Q: What were some of the obstacles you faced when you first opened up shop?

At first, we had some trouble with employees not showing up when they said they would. Finding good staff can sometimes be the hardest part of a startup. We opened in May of 2011, and luckily, in July of that year, we got a HUGE job. We pulled it off with rented equipment, temp labor, and a lot of hard work. It was tough, but we did it. By September of that year, we were struggling a bit because we had underestimated the effect of the local municipalities, which would collect garbage and debris every two weeks – it was a bigger problem than anticipated. At this point, I knew I needed to take a different approach to my work.

Q: I understand you had a fire in your warehouse. That must have been a pretty devastating setback. Can you tell us about that and how you bounced back?

In July 2015, I got a call that our warehouse was on fire. I rushed down there at 3 in the morning, and there were literally five fire trucks putting out a huge fire in our warehouse. We didn’t own the warehouse space, but everything inside – the workshops, my offices, etc., were all completely gone. We still had a separate warehouse of junk, but the revenue-producing parts of the rental property were gone. I had employees and work lined up but no equipment. It was a huge setback. I pretty much had to start all over again.

In September of 2016, Tallahassee was hit hard by Hurricane Hermine. Trees were knocked over taking out power, and the whole city lost power, for an extended period of time. There was a chain of grocery stores that had no power and had to throw things out as a result. They called me and wanted us to clean out multiple grocery stores in the area. We ended up cleaning seven grocery stores that weekend. We had so much work to do; we needed to rent local trucks to empty out these stores. It was also a real crunch trying to get to the landfills because they were closed for the Labor Day weekend — it was just madness.

A month later, Hurricane Matthew hit the east coast, and the same grocery store called me up and said there were, potentially, 400 grocery stores that could be affected. I immediately started rounding up the Junk King Franchises from around the Southeast to try to handle this enormous project. We ended up cleaning 51 grocery stores over 100 hours from South Florida to South Carolina. It was a huge job, but we pulled it off. By building that reputation with this store, I know, if there’s another storm, I’ll be the first person they call for help. I was able to coordinate everything myself because of my corporate background and my experience in property preservation. It was the perfect boost I needed to recover from that warehouse fire.

We worked hard, never gave up, and, ultimately, we came out on top. The finances have worked out, and I’m really happy with the investment I made in my Junk King franchise.

Q: That’s quite the story! Can you tell me more about the role The Entrepreneur’s Source® played in this journey?

A: Our TES coach played a huge role in this journey. To have someone else’s advice has been amazing. I never would have thought about a junk business on my own, but she introduced it to me. She knew it was a bit outside of my budget, but she worked with me and came up with a solution. I never would have been able to make it work without Nancy and The Entrepreneur’s Source®. She was always positive and really helped me through everything. I would never have found Junk King, let alone been able to work out the finances of the whole thing, without Nancy and TES. I just trusted her, and she hasn’t let me down.

Q: What made Junk King the right fit for you?

A: Nancy knew I like to solve problems, and I think that’s why instead of leading me down the path of a mundane franchise, she led me to Junk King. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding. Every day is a new adventure.

Q: So, if someone who’s relatively young and has been working in corporate business for a few years, would you recommend working with TES?

A: Absolutely, if you have been working in a corporate office for years, you’ll have tunnel vision. Working with TES opens your mind to other businesses that you never would have thought of. Just make sure you do your research, ensure that you don’t underestimate your local competition (public and private sectors), and KNOW your region!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about your coach and The Entrepreneur Source?

A: She’s a problem-solver. She’s always ready to guide you and help to get you pointed to the right direction. That comes with the experience and resources that TES has available. She’s still helping me with things like insurance, payroll, and everything. She is a huge help and is always there when I need her. Until I talked to Nancy about these things, I was completely unaware of what is out there. There are so many tools and resources to help me run my business effectively that I wouldn’t know about without TES.

I love the freedom that comes with running your own business. By working for myself, I’m able to go spend time with my kids, watch their school programs, and have flexibility in my life. You just have to remember that being a small business owner definitely comes with responsibilities and a lot of hard work, too.

Q: So, what’s next for you?

A: I would love to get into another franchise, but I’m not sure which one that would be just yet. I’m going to keep my eyes open for the next opportunity. I’m also eager to keep growing with Junk King, of course, especially, my niche of natural disaster emergency cleanups. I’d like to think that one day, my kids will take over the family business.

Though she was unfamiliar with the world of carpet and upholstery cleaning at the time, Marsha is now fully immersed and is enjoying her new career and the priceless time with her family.

We sat down for an exclusive Q&A with Marsha to get some knowledge for other corporate professionals contemplating their next steps on their career journey. Here’s what she shared with us:

Hi, Marsha! Tell us a little about yourself and your career prior to going into business for yourself

I graduated from UConn and immediately landed a job at a major insurance company in Connecticut where I put my accounting degree to use. I eventually worked my way up to become the director of the corporate training department where I utilized my passion for helping others. It was exciting. I got to travel, meet wonderful people, and the company even helped pay for my MBA. Even though I was happy in the corporate world, I was really longing to follow in the footsteps of my father and his father, as they were both entrepreneurs. I remember growing up watching them try and go out and make the sale and pitch the products. In the back of my mind, I wanted a piece of that action.

So, there was always an itch. What made you finally scratch it?

Out of tragedy comes triumph. It began in 2015 when my husband was laid off. During that time, he was introduced to The Entrepreneur’s Source® and Steve Rosenkrantz. I found myself intrigued as my husband talked about Steve’s seminar. Low and behold, a year later, I was among the casualties when my company took part in the restructuring process. But here’s the kicker, I had the same outplacement services as my husband, giving me access to a seminar that Steve was providing.

What was it about Steve Rosenkrantz and The Entrepreneur’s Source® that empowered you with the idea of owning your own franchise?

The idea of being an owner wasn’t a foreign concept, I always considered it. But Steve helped convert that dream into a reality. My family says they’ve never seen me this happy. I can’t tell you just how much more relaxed I am with my new lifestyle compared to life in the corporate world. My daughter is a freshman in high school. Being a business owner has afforded me the ability to adjust my schedule so I can attend her school and sports activities, and simply keep a closer eye on her. Oxi Fresh has also allowed me to spend more time with my father. He’s out there helping me at job sites, turning equipment, vacuuming, whatever needs to be done. He’s always happy to be riding shotgun in my little van right now; it’s fun!

Great! Before we let you go, do you have any advice for people considering joining the entrepreneurial ranks?

You should know that it’s going to be a challenge. I can’t say I have had a profit every month but the positives have outweighed the negatives, and I’m really pleased with the results. Strengths

There are dozens of questions that an individual can ask themselves to determine what his or her unique strengths are, the ones above should only be a starting point. Opportunities

Opportunities are the circumstances and possibilities that get you excited and motivated to make a change. It’s not always easy to see what possibilities are out there because dangers sometimes overshadow the opportunities, but you can overcome this by focusing on what you want in your future, not what will stop you from getting there. Some opportunities that an individual can focus on include:

  • Your hunger to create the lifestyle of your dream
  • Your desire to spend more time with your friends and family
  • Your yearning to become financially independent
  • Your aspiration to become more passionate about your career.

It’s easy to get inspired by the opportunities that stand before you because in reality, they are endless. By writing down the most important ones to you, this can help you become more driven to actually set a pathway for you to accomplish them.

New Year’s Resolution Inspiration: Mark and Rebecca Rubick, The Entrepreneur’s Source Success Story.

Early in 2016, Mark and Rebecca Rubick were enjoying their 2nd honeymoon on a holiday cruise.   After more than 20 years in the communications and electrical products industry, Mark knew it was time for a change and he asked his wife about it.   Her response was simple, “You’ve always wanted to buy a business, why don’t you buy something?”   It was a challenge Mark gladly accepted, and the pair headed home on a mission to change their lives through business ownership in 2016.

By late June, with help from Rick Arevalo and The Entrepreneur’s Source®, Mark and Rebecca found their franchise match with Patrice & Associates – a leading national hospitality recruiting franchise.   They were so impressed with the concept that they purchased a regional development deal with Patrice & Associates for the Kentucky and Ohio regions.   And in just a few months, they already have a staff of 6 recruiters and are poised for major success in 2017.

We sat down for an exclusive Q&A with Mark to provide some guidance and advice for other husband-and-wife teams who are considering making the leap into business ownership this year’s New Year’s Resolution.   Here’s what he shared with us:

Hi Mark!   Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career prior to going into business with your wife

Since we’re a team, I’ll give you the background for both myself and my wife.   I spent more than 20 years working in the communications and electrical products industry.   I held numerous positions over the years, including product manager, national sales manager, and director of marketing, and spent most of my career working for Ilsco, Belden, and Thomas & Betts.

My wife, on the other hand, is a financial analyst with a healthcare company here in Cincinnati.   So, we possess complimentary skill sets as she is the financial expert and I’m the marketing and sales expert.

Take us back to that pivotal moment on your holiday cruise.   What made something click?

This was a 2nd honeymoon trip we took together very early this year.   Quick aside – I recommend a 2nd honeymoon trip to everyone!   Anyway – during our vacation, my wife and I were discussing new challenges we’d like to tackle and changes we’d like to make now that we’re in our early 50’s.   During the conversation, she asked me point blank – “you’ve always wanted to buy a business, why don’t you buy something?”   She was right and I’m glad she asked the question while we were away from the stress and pressure of our careers so we could return with newfound energy to go for it!

What role did Rick Arevalo and The Entrepreneur’s Source® play in the process?

I found The Entrepreneur’s Source® early in my research process by responding to an online ad that asked “ever want to own a business?”   I was quickly put in touch with Rick who was instrumental in our due diligence process.   Rick helped us define our possibilities, outcomes, and dreams (POD) and the I.L.W.E. Here’s something I believe keeps most husband and wife teams from taking that leap – their children.   My wife and I have two teenagers.   Is it scary to leave a salaried job for a new business with college on the horizon?   Sure.   However, my wife and I believe the bigger risk would not be taking advantage of a massive opportunity to change our lives.   For one, we went in to this with a game plan and made sure we found a franchise that allowed my wife to retain her salaried position – we did not want a retail outlet or similar business that required both of us to work the business day in and day out.    But more importantly, we were all-in and determined to make this work.   We took the time to educate ourselves and were fortunate to work with Rick Arevalo at The Entrepreneur’s Source® who helped guide us through this process.

So, my advice?   Change your life in 2017 and commit to your resolution to go into business as a husband and wife team!     We did it and so can you!

A The Entrepreneur’s Source Family Biz Success Story: Q&A with The Flying Locksmiths Franchisee, Jim DiSalle.

Three years ago, Lauren Cantor, A Charlotte-based ESource Coach for The Entrepreneur’s Source®, met Jim DiSalle through a local networking group.   After more than 30 years in cable TV (and countless moves around the country), Jim had launched a successful fractional CFO consulting business.   However, he was searching for something more – a franchise business he could run with his two millennial sons who were searching for more fulfilling careers.

So, earlier this year, Jim asked Lauren to help him find a business he could build with his sons and eventually transition out so they could make it their own.    After working with Lauren and The Entrepreneur’s Source® for just a few months, Jim and his sons found their franchise match – The Flying Locksmiths.   They bought half of the Charlotte market in September and they’re off to a hot start (they will surpass their sales goals in November and December).  They’re having a blast together and are gearing up for a big 2017.

We sat down for an insightful Q&A with Jim to provide some insight and guidance for other parents considering going into business with their kids in 2017.   Here’s what he shared with us:

Hi Jim!   Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career prior to going into business with your kids

I worked in Cable TV for 30 years and my background is in finance and operations.   I’ve always been a finance guy – it’s in my DNA – but I’ve always been attracted to the operations component, too.   However, while I loved working in Cable TV, it was an industry that forced me to relocate my family more than a half dozen times when my kids were in grade school.   In fact, I remember one time when we were literally moving in to a new house in Denver and a better career opportunity presented itself in Charlotte.   Thankfully, my wife has always been more than supportive and Charlotte has turned out to be our forever home – but it was definitely time for a career change.   I left Cable TV in 2013 to launch my own “fractional CEO” consultant business for small and mid-sized companies.   This was perfect for many local businesses who didn’t need a full-time CFO and I have done quite well with it.

So, what changed earlier this year?   What inspired you to go into business with your sons?

Starting a business together is an idea I’ve been discussing with my boys for a few years.   Both of my sons are very bright and driven and were frustrated that their lack of college degrees restricted them from securing fulfilling jobs/careers.   When I first introduced the idea, my eldest son, Jimmy, was hesitant because he didn’t want a financial handout and was fearful of us investing our savings in a business.   However, the boys were more open to it when we re-visited the idea earlier this year as they had done a great job accumulating savings they could invest in the business as well.   Additionally, we all agreed it made a lot of sense considering our backgrounds and skill sets.  Jimmy brings the sales and marketing skills and his younger brother, Billy, brings the analytical and logistics skills – making them a perfect pairing for the future of the business.

OK – so you decided it was time to go for it.   How did Lauren Cantor and The Entrepreneur’s Source® help?

Oh – as I’d tell anyone considering going into business for themselves, using a franchise coach like Lauren Cantor is invaluable.   I had no clue people like Lauren and companies like The Entrepreneur’s Source® existed when I launched my consulting business.   Lauren and The Entrepreneur’s Source® were the key to us getting this right because she helped us make an informed and educated decision based on the I.L.W.E. That’s awesome!   So, What’s next for you?   What advice would you share with other parents who are thinking about opening a business with their kids?

As mentioned earlier, if you’re going to start a business, I would recommend the franchising route.   The corporate support and education a franchise company offers is key, particularly when you don’t have experience in that field.   Also – don’t underestimate the importance of working with a franchise coach, like Lauren and others at The Entrepreneur’s Source®.

As far as we’re concerned, we are thrilled with the success we’ve generated in the first few months with The Flying Locksmiths.   We surpassed our sales projections in November and will do the same in December.   And of course, we’re setting aggressive goals to achieve “hockey stick” sales in 2017.  I’m very proud of what me, my wife and my sons have been able to accomplish so far with the family business and I’m excited to see what the future brings!   Best of luck to anyone else looking to take the leap with their kids as well!
